Sedalia 2040 - Comprehensive Plan

Client: City of Sedalia, MO Category: Community Planning, Economic Development

In the summer of 2020, PGAV began the comprehensive planning process in the City of Sedalia, Missouri. Located in mid-Missouri between Jefferson City and Kansas City, Sedalia is home to 21,000 residents. The County seat of Pettis County, the City hosts the annual Missouri State Fair and is home to part of the Katy Trail. PGAV previously worked with the City on other economic development initiatives and brings significant knowledge about planning in similar communities.

Thus far, the comprehensive planning process has included the launch of the project website, an initial public meeting, a meeting of the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, and extensive data gathering. The Sedalia 2040 Comprehensive Plan website allows for engagement throughout the process. PGAV created and maintains the website, providing opportunities for feedback and regular updates to members of the community. The website is also home to the Virtual Town Hall, a tool created by PGAV to provide an immersive experience for those that cannot attend the in-person engagement opportunities. Within the first 30 days, the project website and Virtual Rotunda saw more than 2,000 visits.

Hosting community meetings in the time of COVID-19 requires creativity. In September of 2020, PGAV hosted a socially distanced meeting at City Hall. Over 50 community members attended and were able to provide feedback in a safe way. The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee meeting was held virtually to allow for easy engagement. To ensure a transparent and inclusive process, the plan has been advertised through multiple sources including City newsletters, public radio, newspapers, and advertisements. Progress is also tracked and updated on the website regularly.
